Trauma Surgery

Trauma surgeons (also called surgical critical care and acute care surgeons) specialize in treating injuries sustained from motor vehicle/motorcycle collisions, falls, work/sports related accidents, gunshot wounds, stabbings, crush injuries, pedestrians struck by an auto, etc. Trauma surgeons utilize a myriad of operative and non-operative techniques to treat injuries, usually in an emergency setting. Furthermore, severely injured trauma patients require a team approach in which several consultants from varying specialties (e.g. orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery) provide specific expertise to treat the patient. The trauma surgeons lead the team during the hospitalization, taking each respective consultants' recommendations and prioritizing treatment based on the immediate needs of the patient.

Additionally, trauma surgeons at AAS have expertise in managing unexpected medical and surgical conditions and providing operations related to those conditions that often requires immediate surgery. Examples of those conditions include appendicitis, diverticulitis, cholecystitis, perforated bowel/ulcer, incarcerated hernias, abdominal abscesses, and bowel obstructions.

Trauma surgeons at AAS are highly specialized with board certifications in General Surgery and Trauma/Surgical Critical Care. This provides expertise not only in the field of general and trauma surgery, but also allows us to care for patients that require the intensive care unit (ICU) from conditions related to their trauma injury or from other critical illnesses, such as sepsis, respiratory failure, multi-organ failure, coagulopathy, etc.

Following discharge from the hospital, the trauma surgeon will often follow up with patents in the clinic. In addition to providing continuation of care for surgeries performed, we also provide clinic follow up for non-operative conditions, such as rib fractures, soft tissue injuries, lacerations, solid organ injuries, and many other conditions.
